Today, May 17th, is the International Day Against LGBTQphobia. On this date in 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases. As a teacher and artist, this day has a double meaning for me.
Eight years ago, I fully showed up to school at 7 a.m. in drag. I swear, the day before, I hadn’t planned to ruffle anyone's feathers. I worked at a wonderful school where I felt free to be myself, but it took years to understand the impact of that moment.
That experience led me to connect with people, hear powerful stories, and eventually speak publicly about human rights and education. I always say: school should be better than society, not just mirror it. Education that ignores or disrespects diversity fails its purpose.
My commitment to this cause comes from my own experiences as a student — and especially as a child. Today you see me smiling and confident, but that version of me is very recent. Drag helped me rebuild what had been broken.
Growing up as a queer child, my confidence and self-esteem were slowly destroyed just for being who I was. I didn’t get the chance to discover my sexuality naturally, it was imposed on me through insults and the message that being gay meant being unlovable, unsuccessful, and alone.
It took a long time for me to find affirming LGBTQ+ role models. I remember a fellow teacher once said to me, “You have no idea the impact you make just by being yourself. So many people wake up feeling happier knowing someone like you exists — especially your students.”
I try to believe things are getting better for queer children and youth, I still come across stories that remind me others are going through the same pain I once did. But this cycle can be broken, and we can do better.

Friday, the Professor, is a multifaceted Brazilian-born educator, drag queen, DJ, and human rights advocate now based in Finland. With 15 years of teaching experience and a decade of performing, she combines entertainment with activism, particularly focusing on LGBTQI+ rights. Her background in Natural Sciences shifted during her master's to human rights education, leading her to train educators and students globally. Notably, she was honored by São Paulo’s LGBTQI+ parade in 2017 for her educational impact. Through her YouTube channel Delta Drag and her hit project The Fabulous Trivia Night, Friday blends humor, learning, and advocacy, engaging wide audiences in both formal and informal settings.
Friday offers a variety of services for venues and events, including bars, schools, companies, private parties, festivals, corporate functions, birthdays, and weddings. These services include DJing, drag makeup workshops, drag bingo, hosting events, and the popular Fabulous Trivia Night. Additionally, she conducts educational workshops on topics such as bullying prevention, Pride history, LGBTQ+ inclusion in schools, gender in the natural sciences, and creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students.
